US-India 10-Year Defense Pact Sparks Panic in Pakistan, Leaves Munir and Shahbaz Deeply Uneasy

Islamabad : India and the United States signed a 10-year defense agreement on Friday. The agreement has drawn attention from Pakistan. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry stated that it cannot comment on the matter explicitly. The new 10-year defense agreement between India and the United States is currently being evaluated. Pakistan has concerns about the agreement's potential impact on the strategic balance and security dynamics in South Asia.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed the defense agreement on Friday. This agreement comes at a time of tension between the two countries due to Donald Trump's imposition of a 50 percent tariff on India. This agreement is expected to improve relations between the two countries. Hegseth stated that the agreement is a cornerstone of regional stability and will enhance India-US intelligence and technical cooperation.

Will Tensions Flare Up Again?

Pakistan and India witnessed a fierce four-day military conflict in May of this year. Following the four-day conflict, both sides declared a ceasefire on May 10th. However, tensions remain high even after the fighting has stopped. Pakistan is now focused on the India-US defense agreement.

"The India-US defense agreement is a very recent development. We are evaluating this agreement, particularly in terms of its impact on peace, security, and stability in South Asia," Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman Tahir Andrabi said in a statement on Friday.

Is This Partnership Growing Stronger?

The US-India agreement is an extension of a similar agreement reached in 2015. This agreement covered joint technology development, defense trade, and military exchanges. Ten years ago, the US designated India a Major Defense Partner, paving the way for the exchange of critical military equipment and technology.

The Ministry of Defense stated that India and the United States are committed to working together to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region. It stated that the 2025 Framework marks a new chapter in strengthening the partnership over the next 10 years. It aims to provide a unified vision and policy direction to deepen defense cooperation.
